A Fight for Justice: Juana Millal’s Journey and the Urgent Need for Support

By Giving List Staff   |   January 29, 2025

Across the world,  indigenous leaders fighting for their communities’ rights face immense threats – violence, displacement, and persecution for standing up against powerful forces. PTR’s client Juana Millal shares her powerful journey as a courageous  Mapuche leader dedicated to defending her people’s land, culture, and rights in Chile.

Forced to flee her homeland due to persecution for her activism and unwavering commitment to Indigenous sovereignty, Juana continues her fight from afar, seeking legal justice and advocating for the safety and freedom of her community.

We invite you to listen to her story – one of resilience, courage, and unbreakable commitment to justice. Be inspired by her unwavering spirit and the ongoing struggle for Indigenous rights.

At PTR, we stand with Juana and countless others who have been forced to leave their homes in pursuit of safety and justice. However, with recent shifts in the U.S. immigration laws, accessing legal protection and essential services is becoming even more challenging for asylum seekers and refugees. These growing barriers to justice mean that many are left vulnerable and without essential support and services.

Now, more than ever, we need your help to ensure that those seeking safety are not turned away. With your support, we can continue to provide essential psychological and psychosocial services and advocacy for those who need it most.

Thank you for working hard and striving on my behalf. I am able to work now and I have learned a lot. If I could do more to express my gratitude, I would. Thank you… You carried my worries like they were yours without complaining and helped me to get where I am. My asylum case has been approved. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Help Support Emotional Well-Being for Victims of Human Rights Abuses

Trauma recovery is possible. $50,000 provides 10 survivors of torture culturally reflective, trauma-informed, and linguistically accessible mental health care and case management essential for healing. By improving well-being, the ability to engage in daily activities, and a sense of safety, holistic treatment leads to thriving.

A torture survivor from the Middle East expressed, “[PTR is] a center that allows doubt and suffering that you have internally to go away, and helps you fit into society. Without their support, I don’t know if I would be here now . . . It helped me survive. It’s given me a second life, and the opportunity to be alive.”
